AAMA 501.2 Storefront Window Water Test
The AAMA 501.2 storefront window test is the go-to test for storefront windows. As a matter of fact, it’s really the most requested test for commercial storefront glazing. Another popular test is the AAMA 502 test, however, this test uses completely different equipment. For the test pictured here, we performed the AAMA 501.2 storefront window test.
We received a call from the owner of this clinic located in Southern California. The issues they were having were basic. Water was entering into the building via the storefront glazing system. Rather than setting up a calibrated spray rack system and performing an ASTM E1105 test, we chose the AAMA 501 test for the primary reason that storefronts are rated for this test.

So after we set up, our first order of business was to isolate the wall from the window. We do this with plastic. As a result, we test only the glass and not the wall/window connection. Even though this takes considerably more time to prepare, it’s essential.
Once the water was applied, it didn’t take long for water intrusion to manifest. Within just a few minutes of testing, water entered into the building from the location tested. Furthermore, the water patterns were identical to the stains and interior damage created by older water intrusion.

AAMA (now FGIA) is an organization that provides the standard of testing for water intrusion specialists. Water rain leak detection is a serious business and requires very specialized equipment to perform. On the other hand, there are many people and companies who perform water intrusion leak detection with no professional certifications, knowledge, or experience of how buildings age or should respond to testing. This is especially important because testing requires an intimate knowledge of all types of building assemblies.
